Web Design and the Color Green

Green: What Does It Mean?

The color green is most commonly associated with the environment, and typically inclusion of the color indicates some sort of association with or relation to nature. Green also has other common associations like luck or envy.

One common color association, possibly derived from green’s representation of nature, is the relation of green to health or vigor. In fact certain studies have indicated that green can help with healing, lower blood pressure, and can increase positive attitudes. However, green is also tangentially related to illness. When someone gets sick, or looks nauseous, we say they are “looking green”. Because perception of color differs from person to person, and our individual reactions and perceptions to color are influenced by our culture, the interpretation of a color is somewhat subjective.

In terms of psychological effects, green is largely considered to be a calming color. “Green rooms,” common in television production, gained their name (and their color) from the soothing effect of green walls. Dark green has also been found to have a soothing effect.

In everyday life, products that are made green are often colored as such to indicate a corporate association with environmentalism. In the 21st century, the color green is most commonly associated with the environmentalist movement, as a symbol of nature and an allegiance to the environment. Thus, ‘green’ products are made green to indicate to consumers that this product is safe for the environment. ‘Green’ practices, political associations, and groups are also typically based around environmentalism.
